With nearly 25 years of experience as a clinical counselor, supervisor, and consultant, I offer experience, expertise, and insight to help clients realize their treatment goals. I use an integrative approach with my clients, utilizing techniques from Mindfulness-Based Therapies, ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), CBT (Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy), Existential Psychotherapy, and Person-Centered Therapy.
In addition to my work in private practice, I am a Professor in the Department of Counseling at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, a Fellow of the American Mental Health Counselors Association, and Dual-Diplomate, Clinical Mental Health Counseling Specialist in Trauma Counseling and Integrated Behavioral Health Care Counseling. I also supervise counselors working towards their independent licensure.
My consulting work focuses on teaching professionals and organizations about medical trauma. As the author of the first book focused on medical trauma, Managing the Psychological Impact of Medical Trauma: A Guide for Mental Health and Heath Care Professionals (2016, Springer), I work on behalf of patients world-wide to improve Trauma-Informed Care.
I have published widely on medical trauma and patient support and have worked with the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative/Stanford University and The Council on Patient Safety in Women’s Healthcare to develop assessment tools to help clinicians provide improved quality of care for patients who experience medical trauma.
I am a strong advocate for integrating mental health professionals into treatment teams to enhance the patient experience and improve patient care, and the assessment tools and protocols I have developed are used throughout the U.S. and the world. I am the medical trauma specialist and executive board member for Live the Pain (https://livethepain.org/), an international organization of professionals based in Tel Aviv, Israel working to bring innovative solutions to the management of pain. Additionally, my work has been featured throughout the media, including NPR’s All Things Considered, Doctor Radio on SiriusXM, Health Professional Radio, Refinery29, Social Work Today, Psychotherapy Networker, Counseling Today, Healthcentral.com, The Conversation and Elle Magazine.
